AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds. II. The rate of star formation across the LMC. Abstract. This article compares the distribution of Ks magnitude of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars obtained from the DENIS and 2MASS data with theoretical distributions. These have been constructed using up-to-date stellar evolution calculations for low and intermediate-mass stars, and in particular for thermally pulsing AGB stars. A fit of both the magnitude distribution of carbon-and oxygen-rich AGB stars allowed us to constrain the metallicity distribution across the LMC and its star formation rate (SFR). The LMC stellar population is found to be on average 5 − 6 Gyr old and is consistent with a mean metallicity corresponding to Z = 0.006. These values may however be affected by systematic errors in the underlying stellar models, and by the limited exploration of the possible SFR histories. Our method should be, instead, particularly useful for detecting variations in the mean metallicity and SFR across the LMC disk. In fact, there are well defined regions where both the metallicity and the mean-age of the underlying stellar population span the whole range of grid parameters. The C/M ratio discussed in paper I is a tracer of the metallicity distribution if the underlying stellar population is older than about a few Gyr. A similar study across the Small Magellanic Cloud is given in paper III of this series.

Pulsating AGB stars in the LMC
I give a brief review and interpretation of the evolution, mass loss and pulsation of AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. 1. The Magellanic Clouds in an astro-physical context Our view of the place of mankind in the Universe changed dramatically with the recognition by Abbe (1967) that the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC & SMC) are in fact nearby galaxies composed of stars and nebul...
متن کاملThe global gas and dust budget of the Large Magellanic Cloud: AGB stars and supernovae, and the impact on the ISM evolution
We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully...
متن کاملThird Dredge-up in Low Mass Stars: Solving the LMC Carbon Star Mystery
A long standing problem with asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star models has been their inability to produce the low-luminosity carbon stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Dredge-up must begin earlier and extend deeper. We find this for the first time in our models of LMC metallicity. Such features are not found in our models of SMC metallicity. The fully implicit and simultaneous stel...
متن کاملTriggered star formation in the Magellanic Clouds
We discuss how tidal interaction between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and the Galaxy triggers galaxy-wide star formation in the Clouds for the last ∼ 0.2 Gyr based on our chemodynamical simulations on the Clouds. Our simulations demonstrate that the tidal interaction induces the formation of asymmetric spiral arms with high gas densities and consequently t...
متن کاملThe C18O/C17O ratio in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report detections of J=2–1 line emission from the carbon monoxide isotopomers 13CO, C18O and C17O in the molecular clouds N159W, N113, N44BC, and N214DE in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). 13CO and C18O lines were observed in two additional clouds: N159S in the LMC and N27 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). While 13CO was detected in both of them, only upper limits to the C18O line emissi...
